New Beginnings DVD

New Beginnings DVDNew Beginnings is a 30 minute documentary filmed in 2006 about the experiences of three asylum seekers volunteering in Sheffield. The volunteers and their volunteer managers tell about their experiences, the barriers they have faced and the benefits that have come to both the volunteers and the organisations.
The 3 case studies are:

  • James, a volunteer on the New Beginnings project, started a paid job as a result of the skills and confidence he developed whilst volunteering. He encourages others to follow in his footsteps. In 2009 he returned to the New Beginnings project in a paid capacity as a volunteer co-ordinator
  • Sara, a Newsletter Volunteer for Refugee Housing Association, wants to be a doctor and volunteers to help her achieve her goal.
  • Hassan, an experienced civil engineer volunteers at a Credit Union and helped them develop appropriate services for the Muslim community.
