Sheffield Volunteer Standard Commitment
Organisations applying for the standard commit to implementing the following principles of good practice.
1. Volunteering is open to everyone
Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcomed and policies and good practice are in place to remove barriers to involvement including payment of out of pocket expenses*.
1.a Recruitment of volunteers is fair, efficient and accessible
Processes are clear and requirements for each role are appropriate and inclusive. Volunteers are made aware of processes, timescales and how decisions to accept or reject volunteers are made.
2. We deliver a high quality volunteering programme
Positive involvement gives an experience that is mutually beneficial to both the volunteer and the organisation.
2.a Induction and training equips volunteers to safely and confidently carry out their role
Training needs for each role are identified and volunteers receive the necessary induction and training to do their role.
2.b Volunteers are supported and supervised within their role
A named supervisor ensures ongoing support appropriate to need.
2.c Volunteers receive consistent treatment through use of agreed policies
Policies developed are followed and implemented across the organisation. Policies are up-to-date and consistent.
2.d Insurance, health and safety, safeguarding and other legal requirements are met
The physical and emotional risks of volunteering are identified, minimised and covered by adequate insurance.
* We encourage applications from small groups so if you are a group without paid staff and don’t have a budget to pay expenses you can still apply.
