Tell us about your role and what it involves.
My duties at the reception include greeting people, managing and responding to emails, providing information about current exhibitions, and helping people to find them. I also help to run the shop, for instance keeping it stocked.
What makes that shop special is that it provides space to support local artists and local businesses. This is beautiful in a sense.
I’m hoping to be able to provide and support my own art in the shop some day.
Why did you decide to start volunteering with The Site Gallery?
I was looking for experience to put on my CV – I’d like to eventually get a job in the arts, specifically art education.
I love to support the arts, and I appreciate being involved – I think arts are undervalued and underinvested in. People often dismiss the actual importance of the arts, specifically the political impact that it can have.
I found the opportunity through my university, where I am studying for an undergraduate degree in the fine arts.
What do you enjoy about volunteering, and what have you gained from it?
Lots! I’ve been able to practice my people skills, how to communicate. I’ve made lots of friends and put myself out there to be social.
I’ve gained experience in email writing, being punctual, and general teamwork skills. I enjoy the whole process, it’s an enjoyable job but doesn’t feel like a job. I gain invaluable experience without the pressures.
I volunteer 1-2 days a week and enjoy this flexibility.
Is there anything else you want to tell us about your experience?
It is beautiful getting to know people, having very interesting conversations and discovering other people’s outlooks and perspectives. I’m learning something every day, there is always something more.
I can learn anything from having great political chats to being recommended some amazing books.
I always seize any opportunity I’m given; something small can lead to a big impact – so never dismiss it!
