Students Harry and James both volunteer with the Steel Valley Project. Find out why they started volunteering and what keeps them going back.
Tell us about your volunteer role and what it involves.
James: I volunteer with Steel Valley Project as an Environmental Project Assistant. In short, this role involves aiding conservation projects which improve the local environment for the benefit of wildlife and people. I have been involved in projects such as drystone walling in Bradfield, clearing pathways and repairing a stile for walkers, and constructing a fence for a community garden in Stocksbridge.
Harry: My volunteer role is Environmental Project Assistant. This involves spending a weekday each week in environmental projects, ranging from strimming shrubbery to clear paths, to building fences and fixing stiles. It often takes place in great locations like parks and reservoirs, often in the peak district which makes for some amazing views when volunteering! The work is usually in teams of up to 6, and there is a great positive atmosphere every week.
Why did you decide to start volunteering?
James: Post-exams I found I had a lot of free time and I had heard about Steel Valley Project from a friend and existing volunteer. I have a passion for wildlife and the outdoors, so to complete conservation work with real, tangible outcomes was (and still is!) appealing.
Harry: For me personally, as I am a student, I wanted to get some genuine Sheffield experience and see more areas in Sheffield, rather than doing everything in my ‘University bubble’ with fellow students. I also wanted to meet more people and get some volunteering on my CV.
What do you enjoy about volunteering with SVP? What have you gained from it?
James: Although I like working outdoors and stretching myself physically, it is the people involved which makes volunteering with Steel Valley Project so enjoyable. Everyone I have met has been very approachable, each with great stories and knowledge to pass on. My volunteering experience has given me skills with machinery and equipment, and greater confidence in liaising with people from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds.
Harry: I love so many things about volunteering with the Steel Valley Project. One of the main things I enjoy is interacting with people from all walks of life, of different ages, backgrounds and experiences. I also love the hands-on nature of volunteering, giving me skills in DIY with lots of equipment I wouldn’t usually have access to (pickaxes, strimmers etc.). I have gained a far more enriched lifestyle, as well as making me generally happier.
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your volunteering experience?
James: I am on industry placement as part of my degree for the forthcoming year, but I plan on volunteering when I return for my final year of university. If you enjoy meeting new people and working outdoors, I wholly recommend volunteering with Steel Valley Project.
Harry: If anyone is reading this, considering volunteering with SVP, my one piece of advice is to just go for it. Everyone there is so welcoming and accommodating, and based on the diverse range of people I have seen volunteer there, I believe there is something there for everyone.
